Detailed programs
FAA Part 107 Drone Pilot Certification Program
The Viewfinder's FAA Part 107 Drone Pilot Certification Program prepares participants to earn their FAA Remote Pilot Certificate, the license required to legally operate drones for most commercial purposes in the United States. The program combines instructor-led study sessions, collaborative learning, and hands-on flight practice to help students build the knowledge and confidence needed to pass the FAA Aeronautical Knowledge Test.
Participants study key topics including FAA regulations, airspace classifications, weather, aviation maps, flight safety, emergency procedures, and drone operations using the FAA's Part 107 study materials and practice exams. The FAA recommends using its official study guide and Airman Certification Standards to prepare for the exam.
In addition to classroom instruction, students participate in supervised outdoor flight sessions where they practice drone controls, pre-flight inspections, flight planning, aerial photography, and safe operating procedures. By combining structured study with real-world flight experience, participants leave the program prepared to take the FAA Part 107 exam and begin pursuing careers in photography, videography, construction, public safety, inspections, agriculture, real estate, and other growing industries that utilize drone technology. The FAA requires first-time commercial drone pilots to pass the Part 107 aeronautical knowledge exam before obtaining a Remote Pilot Certificate.

Current projects
The Viewfinder is currently providing hands-on photography and videography education to youth in Chicago, with a special focus on the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Through interactive workshops and mentorship, participants learn the fundamentals of photography, camera operation, lighting, composition, videography, editing, and visual storytelling while gaining experience with professional-grade equipment.
Our goal is to introduce young people to creative careers, build confidence through artistic expression, and develop valuable technical and entrepreneurial skills that can lead to higher education, internships, employment, or business ownership. By combining classroom instruction with real-world projects, students create professional portfolios while learning how to capture and share stories that positively impact their communities.
Organization goals
The Viewfinder's organizational goal is to create accessible pathways for youth and underserved communities to explore, develop, and pursue careers in the creative industry through hands-on education, mentorship, and access to professional technology.
We aim to establish a sustainable creative learning ecosystem where young people can develop skills in photography, videography, filmmaking, podcasting, drone technology, and digital media while gaining the confidence, experience, and resources needed to succeed. Through partnerships, community programming, and career-focused training, The Viewfinder seeks to bridge the gap between creativity and opportunity by exposing participants to real-world experiences and professional pathways.
Our long-term goal is to build a recognized community-based creative media center in Chicago that provides youth with access to equipment, instructors, mentors, and industry opportunities while expanding programs throughout underserved communities across Illinois. We envision a future where young people are not limited by their circumstances but are empowered to turn their creativity into careers, businesses, and positive change within their communities.

Funding Needs

Funding needs
The Viewfinder is seeking funding to expand and strengthen our creative media education programs by investing in professional equipment, technology, and resources that will provide students with the tools needed to develop real-world industry skills.
Currently, all equipment used in our programs has been donated, loaned, or personally provided through community support. While these contributions have allowed us to begin serving youth and introducing them to photography, videography, and digital media, access to reliable professional equipment is essential to creating a sustainable and high-quality learning environment.
Funding will support the purchase of professional cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, audio equipment, computers, editing software, and drone technology so students can gain hands-on experience using the same tools utilized by professionals in today's creative industries. Additionally, The Viewfinder plans to build a dedicated podcast and media production studio where students can learn podcast production, interviewing, audio engineering, video production, and digital storytelling.
By providing access to industry-standard equipment and a professional learning environment, The Viewfinder will help students develop valuable technical skills, build portfolios, explore career pathways, and gain the confidence needed to pursue opportunities in photography, filmmaking, content creation, drone technology, and entrepreneurship.
This investment will allow The Viewfinder to expand programming, serve more students, and continue creating pathways for young people to transform their creativity into meaningful careers.
