FORMED IN 1992, NANTUCKET EDUCATION TRUST (NET) IS A NON-PROFIT COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION WITH A 3-FOLD MISSION: GENERATE PRIVATE SUPPORT FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION; FOSTER PRIVATE/PUBLIC PARTNERSHIPS BENEFITTING CHILDREN IN THE SYSTEM; HONOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING/LEARNING. IN 2000, NPS FACED A CRISIS AS EMPLOYEES WERE UNABLE TO FIND HOUSING COMMENSURATE WITH THEIR SALARIES. A TASK FORCE WAS ASSEMBLED, LAND LOCATED, DESIGNS CREATED. THE RESULT WAS THE 12-UNIT COW POND AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMPLEX CONSISTING OF MULTI-BEDROOM UNITS FOR SCHOOL STAFF, TOWN, AND HOSPITAL EMPLOYEES. ROOTED IN A COMMUNITY DISTINGUISHED BY A UNIQUE HISTORY AND SETTING, NET PURSUES THESE GOALS: ENHANCE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES ON ISLAND; FOSTER ALLIANCES AMONG BUSINESS, COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL INTERESTS; SERVE AS A CATALYST FOR PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS BENEFITTING EDUCATION; PROMOTE THE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS AMONG ISLAND SCHOOLS AND SCHOOLS IN OTHER COMMUNITIES; SUPPORT PROGRAMS HONORING EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING/LEARNING.
